July/August Wrap-Up

I thought about titling this post "Summer Wrap-up"--but summer isn't showing signs of leaving Texas anytime soon. Last week posted an average of 99 degrees, this week we are looking at 97. On a whole, David and I have been surprisingly unbothered by the summer heat. We get up extra early in the morning to exercise and then limit our outdoor time the rest of the day--it really has not been so bad.

Despite the heat, we are proud to report that we have the greenest lawn on our street. Unfortunately, we didn't even notice until one of our neighbors asked us what our secret was. As it turns out, our secret was ignorance. Apparently our sprinklers have been running three times as often as everyone else. The system must have been set up to run during the night before we moved in and we failed to notice how frequently it was happening. Needless to say, our water bill has made us quite aware of this new homeowner mistake. And unfortunately for our garden, the frequent sprinkling has not had quite the same effect as it has on our grass. In total, we had 2 tomatoes, 3 jalepenos, 3 serranos, and about 15 dead plants. All eight of the veggies were happily enjoyed by some creature other than us. On the bright side, the basil looks great! We will be sticking to herbs next year.

After my summer semester wrapped up we were able to get in some traveling. We went back to the DC area in early August for a wedding and a wedding shower. It was great to see and celebrate with my good friend Natalie at her shower in Alexandria, and then to see our friends Will and Alicia get married in Annapolis. It was a busy weekend but we were able to see lots of great friends and family in the time that we had.

The following weekend I left David in Texas to do one of his favorite things--assemble Ikea furniture--while I went to Ohio to visit family and attend my baby shower. The shower was a great success, my cousin Danielle and her husband recently opened an Inn near some wineries--and she graciously hosted us there. It was really nice to see local family and friends who traveled from Columbus, Detroit, and Seattle to celebrate with us.

In other news, Lucy has decided she is the ideal newborn model...at 8lbs, 20 inches she is the perfect size. So she tried out a few fun gifts like this Redskins hat and a onesie. 

We are making a lot of progress with the nursery. Last weekend we painted (a pale gray), and this weekend we were able to get the bookshelves set up. 

And finally we had the seven month doctor's appointment on Friday. The little guy is weighing in close to 3lbs and already has perfect little feet! We are told he has a full head of hair also.
